The Rum Cake Mixers

Today, we are going to share a nice little family secret treat. Lucky you! You are most welcome to pass it along and share it with your family if you like. We would be honored, as a matter of fact. It was a cake recipe handed down since before WWII and it seems that my mom has perfected it. If you can pronounce it, you get an extra slice.

Moscovish Gebak
10 eggs
1 C. raisins
200 g flour
Rum
200 g sugar
2 Tbsp. vanilla
1/2 C. (1 stick) butter
12 ml rum aroma
1/2 C. (1 stick) baking margarine

Soak raisins in rum overnight. There is no need to refrigerate the raisins. Separate egg yolks from egg whites. Mix sugar, vanilla, and rum aroma with the yolks for 2 minutes with electric mixer. Use a stand mixer not a hand held one. With separate mixer, mix both the butter and margarine together for about 20 minutes. Gently add this to the yolk and sugar mixture. Add the beaten egg whites and flour to make a smooth batter. pour batter into a large (12x9 1/2 inch) baking dish and bake for one hour at 300 degrees Fahrenheit. (You can also make cupcakes from this.) Sprinkle with powdered sugar.

It is a cake that made us live for the holidays and also the only time the kids were allowed to consume anything with Rum in it. We were told of course that most of the alcohol was baked away (hint hint, cough, cough). Mom would wake early Christmas morning and prepare this cake for us. It was the beginning of a wonderful day.

Furthermore, mom might find a special gift under the Christmas tree from the Eclectrics® Mixer series(to be opened on Christmas Eve). We figure that it is time to get her a new electric mixer. Something a little more pro and powerful since she makes these for all the neighbors. The Hamilton Beach® Stand Mixer would definitely do the trick.

First of all what woman wouldn't want her appliances color co-ordinated with the rest of her kitchen? We'll go with a nice shade of green apple. Nonetheless, on a more important note, mom will be thrilled with the 400 watts of power. Sweet! This gadget can handle 9 dozen cookies. Should be good for a few cakes. The 12 settings should give our gourmet cook more mixing flexibility and super control. I'm pretty sure the old mixer had less than half of that. No matter, plus mom will enjoy the pouring and splashing shield. Makes for a much cleaner kitchen I suppose. What would give the rest of the family more joy is the fact that the Hamilton Beach® Mixer is very, very quiet. Ah, here's to a noiseless, sweet smelling Christmas morning.
